Great question! We’re happy to help, and share a bit of history too.
A soap opera is a long-running drama series that follows ongoing storylines about families, relationships, and big life events.
Unlike regular TV dramas, which wrap up their stories in a single episode or season, soaps keep their plots going for months, or even years. Soaps also have a unique look and feel because they film quickly, using multiple cameras and fewer retakes, which differs from high-budget, weekly TV dramas.
Daily Show
A daily show is a TV series that airs new episodes every weekday (or almost daily).
Many soaps fall into this category, as their fast-paced production allows for frequent episodes. Dailies keep the momentum going with constant new developments, making them a staple in many countries where viewers expect fresh content every day.
Why Are They Called Soap Operas
The name comes from early radio dramas in the 1930s and 1940s, which soap companies like Procter & Gamble sponsored. Since these shows were full of dramatic twists like an opera, they became known as "soap operas."
Even though our soaps aren’t selling detergent anymore, the name stuck!
