The steps for enabling closed captions may vary depending on your preferred device or application. Here is a step-by-step guide for a few options:
BritBox Website
- Hover over the video with your cursor to bring up the progress bar & options
- Click on the small speech bubble icon in the lower right
- Choose the 'on' option to switch on closed captions
- You can also adjust the size of the closed captions by choosing the font size you prefer.
- Click on a smaller 'Aa' to see smaller text and the bigger 'Aa' to see larger text
Android, Apple (iOS), LG and Samsung Smart TV
- If closed captioning is available for a show episode or film, either an 'S' or 'CC' icon will appear on the lower right-hand side of the video player. If you're on a mobile or tablet, tap the screen to bring up these options
- If a light blue bar isn't below the 'S' or 'CC' icon, click on the 'CC' icon to turn on closed captioning
- If a light blue bar appears below the 'S' or 'CC' icon, closed captioning is already turned on for the episode or film. Click the 'S' or 'CC' icon to turn it off
- If the show is playing and you can see other elements of the video player like the volume slider and progress bar, but an 'S' or 'CC' icon does not appear on the lower right-hand side of the video player, then closed captioning is unavailable for this episode or film
Apple TV
- Navigate to the image of the show you would like to watch on its brand or season page
- For a film, navigate to the film's specific landing page
- If closed captioning is available for a show, a grey button with a play icon and the letters 'CC' on it will appear below the episode image or beside a film's default play buttons
- Instead of clicking on the episode image itself, navigate down to the grey button with a play icon and the letters 'CC' on it. The button will highlight white when you reach it
- Click this button to play the show or film with closed captioning
- To turn off closed captioning for an episode, navigate back to the image of the episode you would like to watch on a show's brand or season page and click the image
- To turn off closed captioning for a film, navigate to the film's specific landing page and select the default play buttons
Fire TV Devices
- Start playing the video
- Press the 'Menu' button on your Fire TV remote or the Fire TV App
- Select 'Subtitles'
- Select the 'Off' button under 'Subtitles'
- Select from the options on-screen to turn captions on
- Press the 'Menu' button again to return to video playback with subtitles on

Hisense Smart TV

- Press the 'Home' button on your remote to open the TV's main menu
- Select the 'Settings' or 'Accessibility' option, the location may vary slightly depending on your TV's model and software version
- Within the Accessibility menu, look for an option related to 'Subtitles,' 'Captions,' or 'Closed Captions'
- Select the option and toggle it 'on' or 'off'
You may also have options to customize the appearance of the subtitles, such as font size, color, and background.
LG Smart TV

- Press the 'Settings' (or 'Home' and 'Settings') button on your remote
- Navigate to 'All Settings'
- Select 'General'
- Select 'Accessibility', or simply 'Accessibility' depending on the webOS version
- Select 'Closed Caption' and toggle it to 'On'
If you're using BritBox via a set-top box on the LG TV, caption control must happen via the box (TV-level CC may not apply).
Rogers
- Press the 'B' button on the Rogers Xfinity Voice Remote to open the accessibility menu
- Highlight 'Closed Captioning'
- Press 'OK' to toggle on/off
- To customize appearance (font size, color, background style), choose 'Closed Captioning Options' within the same menu
Roku
- First, click the down arrow on the TV remote while the show or film is playing
- If closed captioning is available for a show, a 'CC' icon will appear on the lower right-hand side of the video player
- Click on the 'CC' icon to turn on closed captioning
- Click on 'CC' again to turn it off
Vizio Smart TV
